Our Physicians
Every family deserves a provider they can trust. That’s why our team includes four board-certified pediatricians who have dedicated their careers to children’s health and wellness. Learn more about each physician below.
Dr. Keith Stansell
Pediatrician
A native of Rome, GA, Dr. Stansell earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from Berry College before completing medical school at the Medical College of Georgia on an Air Force scholarship. He went on to complete his pediatric residency at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS, followed by assignments in the Azores and Montgomery, AL.
Dr. Stansell joined Alabama Pediatrics in 2000 and has been a steady presence in the community ever since. He’s board-certified in pediatrics and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Stansell is also actively involved in the Homewood and Vestavia school systems, serves on the Homewood Parks and Recreation Board, and coached youth sports for over a decade.
Outside of work, he enjoys life in Homewood with his wife, Laura, and their two sons, Aaron and Avery.
Dr. Mary Evelyn O'Neil
Pediatrician
Originally from Tuscaloosa, Dr. O’Neil holds a degree in Telecommunication and Film from the University of Alabama and earned her medical degree from UAB. She completed her pediatric residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina, where she practiced for several years before moving back to Birmingham in 2017.
Dr. O’Neil is board-certified and has been featured on local television in North Carolina, as well as serving as an Instructor of Clinical Skills Training. She brings her experience and energy to every visit and is passionate about helping families feel informed and supported.
She and her husband James have two sons and love cheering on the Crimson Tide.
Dr. Heath Pelham
Pediatrician
Dr. Pelham grew up in Homewood and is proud to now serve the same community where he was raised. He studied Psychology at Davidson College, earned his medical degree from UAB, and completed his residency at LeBonheur and St. Jude Children’s Hospitals in Memphis. He also completed an additional year of training in pediatric endocrinology.
Dr. Pelham joined Alabama Pediatrics in 2021 and is board-certified in pediatrics. His clinical interests include childhood obesity, diabetes, and pediatric mental health. He’s actively involved with Independent Presbyterian Church and community outreach efforts like food pantry work.
Dr. Pelham married his wife Erin in 2022.
Dr. Abby Allen
Pediatrician, Certified Wellness Coach
Dr. Allen is a Hoover native who earned her Psychology degree with honors from the University of Alabama, followed by her medical degree and pediatric residency at UAB. She served as Chief Resident at UAB before entering private practice and joined Alabama Pediatrics in 2024.
Board-certified in pediatrics, Dr. Allen also holds certifications in nutrition, personal training, and wellness coaching. She offers nutrition consults for patients ages 10 and up, including young athletes looking to improve performance and families seeking support for healthier lifestyles.
Dr. Allen and her husband, Matthew, have two children, Brady and Molly, and are actively involved at Shades Crest Baptist Church.
